Deadline : Jan 31, 2009
The MEEES programme is an Erasmus Mundus Masters Course, that aims to provide higher-level education in the field of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology. Graduate students involved in this Erasmus Mundus Masters course have the possibility of following one-year MSc programmes on either Earthquake Engineering or Engineering Seismology. In addition, the proposed EM Masters course envisages also the possibility of students following a 18-month study programme that leads to the attainment of a Masters degree on Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology.
If following the Engineering Seismology option, students will acquire the ability to design, execute and evaluate assessments of seismic hazard for site-specific engineering projects, for earthquake loss assessments, and for emergency planning scenarios. Students following the Earthquake Engineering option will acquire the ability to undertake seismic design of new structures and the assessment and strengthening of existing structures. The combined option of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology will enable students to acquire technical competence in both areas.
The MEEES consortium comprises five academic institutions, namely
The Institute for Advanced Study of Pavia (IUSS),
The University of Pavia (UNIPV),
The University of Patras,
The University of Grenoble Joseph Fourier and
Imperial College London.
It is noted, however, that the first two institutions, which are independent but are also both based in Pavia, jointly organise and run the postgraduate earthquake engineering programme in Pavia, through the European School for Advanced Studies in Reduction of Seismic Risk (ROSE School). Hence in subsequent sections of this website, the term ROSE School is employed to refer to the activites of IUSS/UNIPV institutions within the scope of the MEEES consortium.
Students must follow courses and/or carry out dissertation research projects in at least two of the following institutions: ROSE School (Pavia, Italy), University of Patras, University of Grenoble Joseph Fourier. Different taught modules will correspond to equally varying credits, defined according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), depending on the number of work/study hours (each credit is equivalent to 25 hours of work). Masters dissertations, required for the attainment of the degree, may correspond to a number of credits varying between 12 and 18, depending on the effective duration of the research-work effort employed by the student.
MEEES graduates will be awarded a Joint Masters degree by the Istituto Universitario di Studi Superiori, the University of Pavia, the University of Patras and the University of Grenoble Joseph Fourier. The official language is English. Admission to the course depends mainly on academic qualifications, past professional experience, reference letters and English proficiency. The programme begins again in the Fall Term of 2007, that is, in September 2007.
ERASMUS MUNDUS SCHOLARSHIPS
The third-country scholarship is directly sponsored by European Commission, under the scope of its Eramus Mundus programme, and is available to third-country applicants. In order to qualify as a third-country national, applicants must:
not be a national from any of the EU Member States: Germany, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Spain, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, the UK, Sweden, Cyprus, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia
not be a national from any of the EEA-EFTA states: Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway
not be a national from any of the candidate countries for accession to the EU: Croatia, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Turkey
not be a resident on any of the above countries
not have carried out their main activities (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in any of the above countries
REQUIREMENTS
The minimum requirement in order to apply for the MEEES programme is a University Degree, or past professional experience, in Civil Engineering.
Admission to the course depends on academic qualifications, past professional experience and English proficiency, all of which should be included in the online submission procedure described here.
During the online application procedure the applicant will also be asked to indicate the name and email address of three referees. The online system will automatically contact these referees in order to obtain the reference letters. The applicant may enter the system at any time to check whether the reference letters have been submitted and they can send a single automatic reminder to each of the referees if the letters have not been submitted by the deadline.
Through the online application procedure, applicants must provide electronic copies of the following documents:
academic certificates
curriculum vitae
English language certificate (see below)
Note that the degree certificate should explicitly indicate followed modules and marks obtained and, if the documents are not written in English, a translation of their contents is requested.
Please note that all attached documents will be deleted from our server each year at the end of the selection procedure (except for those applicants who are accepted as students to the MEEES programme).
With regards to English proficiency, applicants are asked to submit any documents that attest that they possess an adequate command of the English language. Such documents may consist of:
a score of at least 230 (computer-based exam) or 570 (paper-based exam) in the TOEFL test
a score of 6 or more obtained with IELTS
a degree obtained in an English speaking environment
other test scores that may be regarded as equivalent to those listed above.
If an applicant is admitted to the programme, they will be asked to send to the MEEES Secretariat by post original copies of the aforementioned documents.
When required, the applicant, or indicated referees, may be contacted with a view to obtain further information. As a general rule, applicants will not be interviewed.
Finally, it is noted that the Plan of Studies chosen by the applicant will also be subjected to the scrutiny of the MEEES Applications Assessment Board. In cases where a Plan of Studies is for some reason considered inadequate, acceptance of a given application will be made under the condition that the necessary adjustments will then be introduced to the proposed Plan of Studies.
